A Science of Reading-Aligned Approach

Children learn best when instruction is clear, systematic, and thoughtfully sequenced. Rachel uses trusted, research-based programs, including Sound Sensible and SPIRE, to provide explicit, multisensory instruction grounded in the Science of Reading and designed to support lasting progress.

Sound Sensible

A multi-sensory, hands-on foundational reading program designed to build essential early literacy skills, including:

  • Phonological awareness

  • Phonemic awareness

  • Letter–sound relationships

  • Blending and segmenting

  • Early decoding

By strengthening these essential skills, Sound Sensible helps children understand how spoken language connects to print—the foundation for successful reading.

SPIRE

(Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence)

An Orton-Gillingham–based, research-supported structured literacy program used nationwide to support developing readers.

SPIRE provides:

  • Explicit phonics and spelling instruction

  • Multisensory reading and writing practice

  • Decodable text aligned to lesson content

  • Cumulative review to prevent gaps

  • Built-in assessments to ensure mastery

Each SPIRE lesson follows a systematic, explicit, and cumulative sequence, ensuring students build skills step-by-step with ongoing review and support.

Together, Sound Sensible and SPIRE create a personalized, developmentally appropriate learning path that meets each child where they are and supports steady, confident growth.

A Personalized Path for Every Child

All students begin with a comprehensive literacy assessment to identify strengths, areas of need, and the most appropriate starting point for instruction.

Based on assessment results, each child receives an individualized learning plan that may include:

  • Sound Sensible instruction

  • SPIRE instruction

  • Guided decoding and encoding practice

  • Vocabulary development

  • Targeted fluency practice

  • Ongoing progress monitoring

Instruction is paced thoughtfully—never rushed—so children feel supported as they build understanding, mastery, and confidence over time.
